Dallas-based Monitronics Alarm Systems is one of the largest and fastest growing security monitoring companies in the United States. The company has close to 700,000 commercial and home customers around the country and has been consistently rated as a Top 100 firm in its segment by Security Distribution and Marketing (SDM) magazine for the past several years. Last year the company recorded revenues of $272 million which was a 16 percent increase over the previous year.
Awards and Accolades
In 2010, Monitronics Alarm Systems was named Company of the Year in its category by Frost & Sullivan, a leading business research and consulting firm. The award was in recognition of the company’s technological innovation and customer service. It is the second award Monitronics has received from Frost & Sullivan. In 2008, the firm was named Service Provider of the Year for displaying a high degree of operational skills.
Home and Business Alarm Monitoring Services
Monitronics Alarm Systems provides a range of 24×7 alarm system monitoring services to residential and business customers. Its services include home and business security monitoring, fire and smoke alarm monitoring, carbon monoxide monitoring, and personal medical emergency system monitoring. The company monitors alarm systems using traditional phone lines. However it also offers cell phone and broadband-based alarm monitoring services to customers who want it. Monitronics’ commercial services group provides both single site, and multi-site security monitoring services for business customers. The company delivers its monitoring services from a state-of-the-art, multi-million dollar operations center based near its headquarters in Dallas.
Unique Distribution Model Fuels Growth
Established in 1994, Monitronics Alarm Systems has been growing at an annual rate of 22 percent every year. Though it has not quite acquired the size or scale of market leaders such as ADT, it has become a player to be reckoned with in the security monitoring services industry. Much of the company’s rapid growth has come from its use of a rather unique go-to-market strategy.
Unlike several of the majors in the security monitoring space, Monitronics Alarm Systems uses a nationwide network of about 800 dealers to sell, install and service business and home customers in their area. The dealers are the ones who actually market and sell the monitoring services. Monitronics then repurchases the monitoring contracts from the dealers and provides customers its full spectrum of services. The dealer-based service distribution model has allowed Monitronics to quickly grow its market footprint without having to build a national sales and support force.
Market Poised to Start Growing Again
Market demand for monitoring services such as those provided by Monitronics Alarm Systems has slowly started picking up again after a broad slowdown over the last three years. The recent recession had caused many home customers in particular to cut back on spending in areas such as burglar alarm and home monitoring services. Industry analysts predict that spending in these areas could soon start picking up as the economic recovery picks up steam.
Monitronics Alarm Systems was acquired for $1.2 billion by Ascent Media last year and now operates as a fully owned subsidiary of the Englewood, Colorado-based holding company.
